"When was the last time you saw a black scientist come out of Selma?" The class laughed and so did Dr. Culliver. But as she thought about it, she was saddened by the lack of hope and ability to dream this statement reflected. As Dr. Culliver was teaching her high school science class, one student started to harp on her, making comments about how she was wasting her time teaching them science when he made the above statement.
Dr. Mashika Tempero-Culliver, Seeds of Hope board member and vice principal at R.B. Hudson Steam Academy, shared this story as part of her presentation to the board on Saturday. She shared that while there are many factors affecting academic achievement in the lives of our students, one major reason they are not pursuing colleges and careers is because they do not believe they can. At Seeds of Hope, we want to see our young people in our community dream big dreams, living into the passions and callings the Lord has placed on their lives, not merely succumbing to what they have always seen being done.
The vision for Seeds of Hope Education is this: a thriving Selma where every child and adult has equitable access to high-quality education, lifelong learning opportunities, and pathways to success. By fostering literacy, STEM innovation, workforce readiness, community empowerment, performing arts, and physical education, we seek to break generational cycles of poverty, strengthen families, and build a brighter future for our city.
